Nassau cruise port FAQ
The port
Where do cruise ships dock in Nassau?
At Nassau Cruise Port on Prince George Wharf, downtown. It has six berths (NAS 1 to NAS 6) and can take three of the largest ships at once. Bay Street starts right outside the terminal and the Straw Market is about two minutes' walk.
How do I know which berth my ship is at?
Nassau Cruise Port publishes the berth for each call in its schedule, usually a few weeks ahead. Pick your ship in the bar at the top of this site and we show it; if the port has not assigned one yet we say so rather than guess.
Can I walk into town from the cruise ship?
Yes. Downtown starts at the port gate: the Straw Market is about 2 minutes away, Parliament Square about 5, and the Queen's Staircase and Fort Fincastle about 15 to 20 minutes uphill. Fort Fincastle and the Water Tower have been closed for restoration since March 2025 with no reopening announced (October 2026), so check before you climb.
How long is the walk from my ship to the terminal in Nassau?
All six berths are on one pier system and everyone walks to Terminal 1 and out to Bay Street. By our measurement it is about 3 minutes from Berth 1 (the quay in front of the shops), about 6 from Berths 2 and 3 (middle pier), about 8 from Berth 4, and about 7 to 9 from Berths 5 and 6 on the outer pier. The port's map shows tram assistance points on the piers for guests who need help; there is no published schedule.
What is the closest beach to the Nassau cruise port?
Junkanoo Beach, about a 15-minute walk west along Bay Street. It is free and busy on ship days. Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is the best-known beach, a short taxi or water-taxi ride away, but public access is disrupted by a resort building site (October 2026): ask your driver which path is open, and never wade round a fence.
How do I get from the cruise port to Atlantis?
By water taxi from the port's ferry terminal on the pier to the Paradise Island ferry terminal and a short walk, or by taxi over the toll bridge: the zone fare is $14 for two (plus $4.40 per extra passenger), about 10 to 20 minutes. Jitney buses do not go to Paradise Island. You need a day pass to use Atlantis's water park and pools.
How busy is Nassau on a cruise ship day?
On a big day six or seven ships bring more than 30,000 guests. Town and Junkanoo Beach fill from about an hour after the first ship docks and empty in the hour before all-aboard. Our crowd model shows the curve for any day; it is an estimate, never a head count.
Do I need Bahamian dollars?
No. The Bahamian dollar is worth the same as the US dollar and US cash is accepted everywhere visitors go. Carry small bills for taxis, jitneys and tips.
What do I need to get back on the ship?
Your ship card and a photo ID (ship card only for guests 18 and under). Be back by your ship's all-aboard time, usually 30 minutes before sailing: check your ship's app or daily planner.
Taxis and the water taxi
How much is a taxi from the Nassau cruise port to Atlantis?
The government's zone fare from the cruise port to Paradise Island is $14 for two people, plus $4.40 for each extra passenger (2024 regulations). The bridge toll is not in that fare, so ask whether the driver's quote includes it. The water taxi is the other way across.
Are Nassau taxis metered?
No, not for these trips. Fares from the cruise port are fixed by zone in the 2024 regulations and quoted for two passengers, plus $4.40 per extra passenger. Hiring a taxi by the hour is also regulated: $60.50 for the first hour for up to five passengers, then $29.70 a half hour.
Where is the taxi stand at the Nassau cruise port?
At the taxi station in the port's Arrivals Plaza, just outside the cruise terminal.
Jitney bus questions
How much is the jitney bus in Nassau?
$1.50 a ride downtown and along West Bay Street, paid in cash to the driver; longer trips cost more. Operators want $2 and have only put a strike threat on hold (October 2026); no new fare has been approved, so check before you ride.
Which bus goes from the cruise port to Cable Beach?
Jitney route 10 runs from downtown along West Bay Street past Junkanoo Beach, Arawak Cay, Saunders Beach and Goodman's Bay to Cable Beach and Baha Mar. Catch it near George Street and Bay Street, a few minutes' walk from the port.
Can I take the bus to Atlantis?
No. Jitneys are not allowed on the Paradise Island bridges. Take the water taxi from the port's ferry terminal or a taxi.
